photo shoot for commercial model

model posing against a painting with use of color gels

rachel is an agency-represented model I had met on model mayhem. her agency requested that she get photos of a more commercial type to diversify her book. so we decided to do a portfolio shoot.

the theme was fun. she had casual clothes in fun colors and she wanted poses that were playful and dynamic. she had tried another model photographer in dc but apparently the guy was at ease only shooting portraits. at the same time I connected with a hairstylist turned makeup artist. she looked promising and was bustling with ideas. she was supposed to work with the theme and come up with fun makeup. she did reasonably well – to the naked eye.

when you do makeup for photography, you have to anticipate how the camera sees it in the lighting the photographer’s gonna use. it’s not easy when you don’t have experience working on photo shoots. unfortunately, not all makeup artists are willing to collaborate on the set. they’re all on top of their game –until it’s time to prove it.
