a young black teen contacted me to book a photo shoot for actor’s headshots. he studies theater arts at howard university in washington dc. it came at a time I hadn’t shot any actors in a while. he came to the studio with a lady and they said the pictures were needed for upcoming auditions. after brief introductions, I test my lighting setup before a warm-up shoot.
the boy was mild-mannered but felt very comfortable. taking photos of someone who is not camera shy makes the job of a photographer easy. I started shooting at a frantic pace and he didn’t need any cues. usually, I tell clients to change poses during the session so we have variety in the photos.
for a young actor like him, standing on a photographer’s set is just an extension of the stage. acting is like second nature to him and he was able to change expressions like playing different characters. for wardrobe he brought a set of v-neck shirts of different colors. he wore them on top of the round neck black shirt that he had on. that gave us the opportunity to vary colors and change backgrounds occasionally. he came out happy, with great shots that are sure to be assets if he goes to casting calls.
