a lady called me monday, asking how much I charge for professional headshots and it was booked the following day. I greeted at the door an unassuming woman who was busy with her iphone. she was plainly dressed with a lavender sweater and pants, no makeup.
a little warm up conversation and we’re on to a shoot. she told me that she was a reporter working for the washington times in dc. for a news person, she displayed great comfort in front of the camera. since there were no changes of wardrobe it was a straight shot. with some variations of lighting we did some headshots, half-body shots, pausing every once in a while for her to look at the pictures and give feedback.
then we tried to be creative. one picture that I clipped from a magazine she liked and did the pose. lighting was direct and it was a picture that made it to the final selection. after selection of the pictures, I suggested that we do some glamour retouching on two of them that were the favorites. that goes beyond the basic touch-up limited to removing blemishes. it involves advanced skin smoothing, removal of bags under the eyes, corrective retouching and eye shadow. if you look at the final result, you would think a makeup artist did the job.
